I had the privilege of working in the Mission Hill neighborhood during Mayor Menino’s leadership. He showed up for everything, and every now and again, you’d see flashes of fatigue or even boredom, but once he found a few kids in the crowd, his eyes would light up and off he’d go to see how they were doing in school, were they being good at home and helping their mothers, being nice to their friends. He could connect in a minute, and you knew he truly, truly cared. We were lucky to have so much of his time and passion. Thank you to his family for sharing him with the City.

I remember meeting Mayor Menino when I was a Sophmore in HighSchool. He came in-Calm,Cool and Collected and when I interviewed him for the School Newspaper, he was so down to Earth. Throughout my time at the JEBURKE HighSchool, Mayor Menino supported the Burke and made sure we rose up to a higher level. As the years went on, whenever I saw him, he was always smiling and always had something positive to share. May he Rest In Peace. Thank you for all you have done for us Mr. Menino. Gone but never forgotten. I will post some pictures when i am able. Thank you Menino family for having shared such a wonderful man with us.

Mayor Menino was a long time supporter of Joslin Diabetes Center. I had the incredible honor of meeting the Mayor, twice, at City Feast in the North End. It is a fundraiser for Joslin. I was (and still am) a huge fan of Mayor Menino. He led Boston through the good times and the bad times. He made Boston the leader in healthcare and education. He was truly a class act. It is because of him that Boston is such a clean city and a city that makes everyone proud of. Thank you Mr Mayor for everything that you have done for Boston. You will truly be missed “Mr Boston”. Peace and Love to Mrs Menino and the rest of his family.

I worked on Mayor Menino’s campaign in 1993, carrying my newborn son with me as I held up signs and worked the polls. Both of us — Roslindale residents — think he is truly one of the greatest men to ever lead a city, and we are inspired to be big, bold, feisty Bostonians because of his leadership, compassion, decency, and unrelenting service to the public good. Our deepest sympathies to the family of this amazing man, and our prayers are with the faithful departed.

As a proud Hyde Park resident, I will miss my neighbor and friend. 25 years ago when my only brother was killed on the streets of Boston, I remember a then City Councilor Menino visiting with our family. For close to 20 years, I’ve been a fundraiser and I really got to know the Mayor while working at Dimock, and cannot remember a time when he and Angela weren’t joining us for Steppin’ Out. I join Charlie Lagasse, in thanking the Mayor for his support of Joslin Diabetes Center where I worked for 4 years. The Mayor joined us in our quest to find a cure for Type 1 Diabetes. He always said that the Joslin City Feast event (created by Carla and Ron Gomes of Antico Forna) was one of his favorite events because of the cause and the great Italian Food. Boston has loss an ICON, but his legacy will live on forever. He was a blessing to me, my family and the City of Boston. RIP Mayor Menino and thank you for all you did for our community-at-large….Denella J. Clark

All of us at Spaulding are saddened by the news of Mayor Menino’s death. We send our heartfelt and deepest condolences to his wonderful wife Angela and the entire Menino family. To the Spaulding community he was many things; a patient, a leader, advocate and most importantly a friend.

Mayor Menino’s accomplishments for the city of Boston are far too vast to list. His lifelong compassion for others and commitment to equality included advocating for the community of people with disabilities. Well before he would ever need any of our care himself he fought to ensure that Spaulding would thrive as one of Boston’s premiere health care institutions and that all patients who left our hospital would enter a city full of access and opportunity.

Of the many moments that I cherish with Mayor Menino, none can compare to his leadership and counsel during the Boston Marathon Bombings on April 15, 2013. Spaulding was preparing to move to the long planned state-of-the-art hospital in the Charlestown Navy Yard when the crisis occurred. Like many immediately after the Bombing, we were evaluating the road ahead. I talked often to the Mayor in the days that followed and his focus and leadership was clear, the move to the new Spaulding must move ahead and be celebrated as planned. Like many other times, he was proven correct as the opening and celebration of the new Spaulding was a momentous and defining moment in our history. As always he was present, he was with us at our gala celebration and with us on opening day to thank staff and welcome patients, many of whom were survivors of the Marathon Bombings. The poignancy of a new Spaulding was only magnified in the following months as we had the honor of playing a central role in the healing of some of the most severely injured.

Next to the new Spaulding in Charlestown is the most perfect tribute I can think of for our good friend. Menino Park is Boston’s first fully inclusive playground and park allowing children of all abilities to engage in recreation and have fun together. The park was the vision of Mayor Menino and is one of the most wonderful gifts he could give to Spaulding and the entire local Charlestown community and more broadly for the region. Each day everyone at Spaulding can look out and see this beautiful addition to the community with our patients and their families, our visitors and throngs of others from the community engage in play to discover what is truly possible for them, all with a stunning view of the city he helped shape.

While we mourn this loss, we take solace in the example we have been given to follow. It is incumbent upon all of us to continue to blaze the path of equality and inclusion Mayor Menino set forth. Continuing his work is the best possible honor we can pay to a man who devoted so much to ensuring our city’s success.

As a resident of the beautiful Charlestown Navy Yard I personally am grateful every day for this wonderful tribute to our extraordinary Mayor – this special Menino Park- at Spaulding Rehab Hospital – a wonderful neighbor. As the 4 th generation of a family proud to call Boston our home, I’m especially appreciative of having had the opportunity to work with the Mayor and the Commissioner ofThe Parks Department in restoring and beautifying the Statler Park in Back Bay. Mayor Menino has left a legacy in every corner of our great City for Bostonians and visitors alike to enjoy forever! We will always miss him.

One of the best moments I recall with the mayor is when we were in danger of losing summer jobs because of budget cuts. and he met with us in City Hall. and he looked at about 12 of us across the room during that warm june day and asked us why did we want to work? we all gave our reasons, He looked at us and smiled. He said Don’t be late to work we need you, now let’s all get some ice cream. He made sure there was a way for us and a lot of other youth jobs and continued to. that was the summer 2000, and I appreciate him for it because that was my first job.

Our Hero and role model, His Honor Mayor Thomas Menino has passed into Eternity. My husband Eric and I send our deepest condolences to Mrs. Angela Menino and the Menino family, with much gratitude for the sacrifices and patience, love and support they gave to Mayor Menino all these many years so that he was able to serve us, the residents of Boston and citizens of Massachusetts, so selflessly, so brilliantly.

Years ago, my husband, Eric Linter the astrologer, and I used to live in Jamaica Plain, on a beautiful, but busy, over-used and unsafe road by the Faulkner Hospital. We invited Mayor Tom Menino to our home for dinner to talk about our 5 year struggle to get a sidewalk constructed on Allandale Street, in JP where we were living back then. It took me lots of work and persistence. I showed up everywhere the good Mayor was speaking, with petitions and letters. But when he suggested that he come and visit us, I knew he was serious! He gave me his inner office number and his secretary Annette clued me in on all his favorite foods!! The evening of our dinner, Mayor Tom got out of his limo while rush hour traffic speeded by. He ascended the 30 steps to our front door, and said as he caught his breath from his long climb, “You people need a sidewalk!” I laughed, said “Yup! but come on in first and sit down so we can eat all the good food we’ve made for you. Then we’ll talk.”

Thanks to Mayor Menino’s secretary Annette and our friend, the floral designer Yvette Viard’s great French cuisine, we had a perfect meal, with His Honor’s favorite foods! Broccoli rabe and chicken marsala… hopefully everything he liked. He took off his jacket, kicked back in his seat and we talked about our hopes and dreams and what we could all do to make things better for our street AND the city until way past 11 PM! Mayor Tom knew something good, something positive to say to and about each one of us at our dinner table. He and I discussed the need for more funding for the arts. I’m a songwriter and photographer. All the time I was working on getting a sidewalk on our street, I was also recording my Cd, Highway of Dreams, the title coming from my long and determined efforts outside our very own front door. The Mayor was a little stumped though when it came around to talking about astrology with my husband Eric Linter… but they were both Capricorns! The Mayor was in good company and they had fun!

At our table were a few of our neighbors and State Rep. Kevin Fitzgerald and his wife, whose wedding anniversary we were celebrating that evening with a heart shaped chocolate cake! The Commissioner of Transportation, at the Mayor’s “request”, even showed up. I had to borrow silverware, dishes from our friend, Patrick Byrne at Cobwebs Antiques in JP and chairs from another neighbor. Mayor Menino got down to business right way. He looked over at the Commissioner, put on his serious face and stated that we needed a sidewalk, “Do it!” he said to Commissioner. Short and sweet, right to the point! The rest of the evening we all just had fun and laughed! One of the best nights of my life!

The next day, first thing in the morning, I received a phone call from the Commissioner… “Are you happy yet?” I didn’t even realize who it was on the other end of the phone. He had left for a vacation, but was making sure that Mayor Menino’s wishes and our needs were being taken care of!! …ASAP! The Commissioner then asked me to look out the window… to my complete amazement, there was a whole crew of workers outside, measuring… reengineering the street, putting up signs and more. Not only did we get our sidewalk… we got a truck ban too! At last I could walk down our street and not fear for my life!

The sidewalk went in right way… from Centre Street by the Faulkner Hospital to the Brookline end of Allandale Road… a red brick-like pressed asphalt, maintaining the beautiful tree lined, old fashioned, almost country road look of the road, just as Mayor Menino and I had wanted. To Mrs. Menino, I would like to sincerely say that I regret not having gone to visit Mayor Menino myself to thank him personally. Please accept my gratitude on his behalf. When the sidewalk was constructed, I received thank you notes from our neighbors and running clubs, etc., but I should have relayed those to the good Mayor. He deserved them.

I will never forget Mayor Menino. I loved him and will honor his memory by trying to be the best person I can be and by making sure that I leave the town I am in now better than when I moved into it. I hope that we all, private folks, media people, elected politicians, corporate executives, police, artists and craftsmen, elders and medical professionals, educators, shopkeepers, religious leaders and public servants – all of us – will pause and think about how best to honor Mayor Tom Menino’s memory as well as his shining example of a life well loved and lived!! As Martha Coakley so aptly mentioned, “Tom always reminded us, “Remember the real people!” His Honor DID just that… because he was a REAL person. He was my friend and yours!

Peace, Comfort and Healing to those who have had the joy and blessing to personally share their lives with Mayor Tom Menino. He was a gift to us all. We loved him.

I will remember you, Your Honor, Mayor Tom Menino. Thank you.

I remember the last time I saw Mayor Menino as he was leaving Davio’s Northern Italian Steakhouse in the South End. Him and his wife saw me at that moment. It was quite a surprise when it happened.

I also recall seeing him with Congressman JoeKIII and former Congressman Joseph Kennedy II at the Cool Globes event at the Boston Common last year. He was also a speaker at the 23rd Celebration of Life at the AIDS Action and Victory Programs Thanksgiving Dinner. The Rev. Liz Walker, Representative Gloria Fox and her Chief of Staff, Mary Tuitt, were also in attendance.

How do you begin to honor a man that gave so much of himself to the city he loved. What he did for the homeless population in Boston has earned him a place in heaven. When you met him you instantly felt like he was your personal mayor. He was like that! The love for the city and it’s residents just shone through all the time. Mayor Menino handled many wonderful moments and many tragic moments over his 20 year term as mayor and he handled them all with dignity. He will be missed and my heart goes out to his family, loved ones and former staff. Prayers to all and may he rest in peace.

I was one of a select few who got to know Tom personally back in 2004,
as I was an active member of the advance teams for the presidential
campaign of then-US Senator John Kerry. Tom always did his best to
make things easy on us – offering us free drinks (non-alcoholic, of course)
and snacks whenever we were on duty at events in the Boston metropolitan
area or surrounding communities, as well as allowing us to borrow staff from
his office whenever we needed additional people to help out with various things.
He was truly a good man, and devoted himself to the city and people of Boston
in so many ways that were both seen and unseen. May he rest in peace,
and may God be with the family and friends that Tom has left behind.

When I first moved to Boston, I was working for WRKO 1996. My first marketing gig was having Mayor Menino and Buddy Cianci go head to head at Locke Ober for a cook off. I had just graduated from college and I was so pumped to meet a man so respected in Boston. Thank Mr. Mayor for making me feel safe during 9/11 and following up the same feeling after the marathon bombings. I met you a couple times and for that I am grateful.

My partner and I met Mayor Menino while standing on Dot Ave at our first Dot day parade in 2003. He was smiling greeting residents as we stood along Dot Ave .
I turned to my partner and said ” look there is the Mayor- he has been so great for boston”. We greeted the woman standing to our right and introduced ourselves. After saying to her how much we loved Dot, for it’s diversity of neighborhoods, it’s welcoming of non traditional families she introduced herself as Angela. We then said to her ” look there is the Mayor!” She replied ” I know, I came with him, he’s my husband! ” our mouths dropped open !
What wonderful people Mayor Menino and Angela. Selfless, kind, humanitarians. We, the citizens of Boston, are so fortunate to have had their generosity and civil service- We thank you from the bottom or our hearts.

    Dear Angela & Menino Family,

I had the opportunity to meet Mayor Thomas M. Menino when I was 11 years old at the “I Remember Mama” Luncheon. I was the youngest volunteer and seemed to be doing something right because all of the “moms” wanted to dance with me. I had the opportunity to speak to Mayor Menino that day and it was life changing. My father had recently obtained full custody of me and my brother and my mother was in jail. My life was in disarray. My cousin invited me to the luncheon as a way to get out of the house and involved with something good. The Mayor did not know my back story when we spoke. He asked me my name and where I lived. I told him Michael Satterwhite and Lynn Massachusetts. He jokingly got upset that I wasn’t from Boston. He asked if we could take a picture and then continued to inquire as to what I wanted to do with my life. I thought I could be an attorney and he said good choice. The following week I get an official letter from the City of Boston with a copy of the picture I took with the Mayor and a thank you card. The Mayor reached out to the Mayor of Lynn who reached out to my principal and they all thanked me for my community service. I felt alone one week and the next week I wasn’t. Somehow the Mayor compiled a group of local leaders to keep an eye on me. Immediately my outlook on life changed. For 18 years I had the opportunity to know Mayor Menino and to work with him on the Mother’s Day luncheon. I learned that time is the most valuable thing in life from the Mayor. I learned that a simple handshake and an acknowledgment can change someone’s outlook on life. I practice these two important life skills everyday and I am known as the Mayor in my group of friends. The last conversation I had with the Mayor was about my niece and nephew attending the same school with your grandchildren and the Mayor was happy to hear that they were friends.

My family lived in Georgetown Homes 1972-1979. The Menino lived in the adjoining unit on Margaretta Drive. His children played with mine, The Mayor and Angela were always friendly.

From time to time I’d run into The Mayor about the city we’d nod in mutual recognition and say “hello.”

He was loved by all, simply because he will always be remembered as The Mayor for all neighborhoods.
